Foreign direct investment (FDI) disbursements in Vietnam totalled an estimated $5.75 billion in the first six months, up 0.9 percent from the same period last year, the government portal at chinhphu.vn reports, citing statistics from the Foreign Investment Agency.
Meanwhile, in the year to June 20, some $6.85 billion of FDI had been pledged by foreign investors in Vietnam, representing 64.7 percent of that in the same period last year, including newly registered funds and extra capital from operational projects, said the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
In specifics, 656 fresh projects were licensed with pledged capital of $4.85 billion while 219 operational projects received additional funds of $1.99 billion in January-June, equivalent to 93.2 percent and 37 percent of last year's investments respectively.
The processing and manufacturing industry attracts most of FDI during the period with $4.8 billion worth of new and additional investment, or 70.2 percent of the total.
South Korea is the biggest investor with newly registered and extra capital of $1.55 billion, followed by Hong Kong with $1 billion and Japan with $806 million.
Most of the fresh FDI capital in the period was committed to HCM City with $886.3 million, surpassing Binh Duong Province with $876 million and Dong Nai Province with $688 million.
Foreign-invested enterprises so far have fared quite well, posting export earnings of an estimated $47.82 billion during the first half of the year, rising 16.6 percent year-on-year and accounting for 67.5 percent of the country's total export value.
Some big FDI projects licensed in the year's first half are Thang Long Cement Plant, invested by an Indonesian firm with registed capital of $325.65 million, and Texhong Hai Ha Industrial Park capitalised at $215 million in the northern province of Quang Ninh, Dai An Vietnam-Canada international hospital valued at $225 million in the northern province of Hai Duong, and a condo project in HCM City worth some $200 million.
