New plant will bolster Laird's design and manufacturing capabilities for the global smartphone and portable electronics market
Expanding its international reach and proximity to key Asian markets, global technology company Laird has opened a new manufacturing plant near Hanoi -- its first in Vietnam -- to better serve manufacturers of smart phones, portable electronics and other devices, it was announced today.
Laird's state-of-the-art facility in Bac Ninh is one of more than 50 Laird facilities in Asia, Europe and the United States. The plant began fully operating Wednesday following a festive ceremony led by Laird Chief Executive Officer David Lockwood, and attended by employees, regional dignitaries, government officials and journalists.
"Vietnam has grown to become a leading manufacturing center for many global technology companies, and we're very glad to be among them," Lockwood told the audience. "This plant will further strengthen our design and manufacturing capabilities worldwide."
Lockwood also said the facility "underpins Laird's growth prospects for 2014 and beyond."
Laird has more than 9,000 employees worldwide, and joins a growing chorus of the world's leading multinational corporations making foreign direct investments (FDI) in Vietnam.
The facility will predominantly manufacture precision metals and electronic materials for Laird's Performance Materials Division, which designs and supplies electromagnetic interference shielding, thermal management solutions and signal integrity products for the smart phone, transportation, IT/telecoms, medical and consumer industries worldwide.
The Bac Ninh plant, Lockwood said, will complement Laird's new design center and its newly acquired Model Solution prototype business, both in Seoul, South Korea, and other Laird facilities in China and Malaysia.
Laird's growth will also be delivered through its Wireless Systems Division, which designs and supplies a broad range of products, systems and software solutions that enable wireless communications such as "smart" antenna solutions, automotive telematics, M2M, V2V and V2X infrastructure antennas, embedded wireless and automation and control solutions.
Laird operates 14 other facilities throughout Asia, where it conducts research and development, manufacturing, prototyping and engineering, and provides support to customers in the region.
